STORYLINE
Chinese President Hu Jintao met US business leaders from a broad cross-section of industries on Thursday, ahead of the APEC summit in Honolulu, Hawaii.
President of the US Chamber of Commerce, Thomas Donohue, was among those present.
While hopeful of increasing business ties with China, US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and US business leaders have been calling for more progress in allowing China’s currency to appreciate through market forces ahead of the summit.
At the talks Hu is expected to come under pressure to carry out structural economic reforms to make it easier for US firms to do business in China, and to implement political reforms in tandem.
Earlier on Thursday, US Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton spoke at length about the need for the US and China to work together, but said China first had to take steps such as ending unfair discrimination against US and other foreign companies, and ending measures that disadvantage or pirate foreign intellectual property.
