He was speaking at the gathering to welcome British Prime Minister David Cameron to the country, before the upcoming G-20 in Brisbane.
Mr Abbott told businesspeople, Australia was “extraordinarily basic” and would have seemed like the moon to the convicts.
He also said the continent was “nothing but bush” before expounding on the beauty of Sydney as a city.
He did not make any reference to Australia’s First Peoples.
Mr Abbott also urged Australians to bring their infrastructure expertise, and invest in Britain.,
